Prioritizing AI Risks - MIT AI Risk Initiative

A new expert survey highlights where AI risks are escalating fastest, and who carries responsibility for addressing them. The findings show a widening gap between those most vulnerable and those most capable of mitigating harm.

Key Insights

1️⃣ High‑Severity Risks - Experts rank AI‑enabled weapons, cyberattacks, dangerous capabilities, extreme power centralization and false information as the most severe threats.

2️⃣ Catastrophic Probabilities - In a business‑as‑usual scenario, 18 of 24 risk domains show >10% chance of catastrophic outcomes within five years. Even with pragmatic mitigations, all domains retain >5% risk.

3️⃣ Persistent High‑Risk Areas - Dangerous capabilities, AI‑enabled weapons, power concentration, inequality & unemployment, and environmental harm remain high‑risk even under mitigation scenarios.

4️⃣ Vulnerability Asymmetry - Users and affected communities are the most exposed to harm, yet have the least power to reduce it.
